Mortgage Licensees: 2025 Mandatory Re-licensing Education Program Requirement

In 2025, the Mortgage Broker Industry Council has mandated that all mortgage licensees complete a re-licensing education program which aims to enhance the understanding and practices surrounding private lending within the mortgage industry.

The Alberta Mortgage Brokers Association (AMBA) is administering the Mortgage Broker Private Lending 2025 Relicensing Course.

Registration is now open.

This course is designed to give you the skills and knowledge you need to:

• Understand how private lending works for borrowers and lenders
• Know when it’s right for your clients
• Guide clients on when best to enter or exit private loans

The 2025 re-licensing education program reflects the industry’s dedication to maintaining high professional standards while safeguarding the interests of consumers who rely on mortgage professionals for sound advice and services.

Important: complete the course before licence renewal on September 30, 2025. 

You must complete the Mortgage Broker Private Lending 2025 Relicensing Course before you can start the licence renewal process for the 2025/2026 licensing year. You will not be eligible to renew your licence until you have completed this course.


Why do I have to take this course?

In 2025, the Mortgage Broker Industry Council has mandated that all mortgage licensees complete a re-licensing education program, which aims to enhance the understanding and practices surrounding private lending within the mortgage industry. The 2025 re-licensing education program reflects the industry’s dedication to maintaining high professional standards while safeguarding the interests of consumers who rely on mortgage professionals for sound advice and services.
 
Who are the course providers offering the course? 

The Alberta Mortgage Brokers Association (AMBA) is the only course provider offering and administering the Mortgage Broker Private Lending 2025 Relicensing Course. 

What is the cost of the course? 

The Mortgage Broker Private Lending 2025 Relicensing Course is not administered by RECA. You can find more information and register for the course on the AMBA website. The cost of the course is $229.

Why is there a course cost? 

The price of the course is in line with similar industry courses and was reviewed by RECA as part of our Request for Proposal (RFP) process. It is in place to cover the costs associated with developing the course, such as instructional design fees, hosting software, administrative services, and more.
 
Is this course mandatory? 

Yes, the Mortgage Broker Private Lending 2025 Relicensing Course is mandatory. The Mortgage Broker Industry Council has mandated that all mortgage licensees complete this course before you can initiate the license renewal process for the 2025/2026 licensing year.

I am enrolled in the course but found out I am exempt? Can I request a refund?

Please contact the course provider, AMBA, directly at education@amba.ca for more information about their refund policy.

I have completed Ontario’s Private Mortgages Course; do I have to complete the Alberta Private Lending Course? 

The Registrar has determined that licensees who have completed the Private Mortgages Course approved by the Financial Services Regulatory Authority of Ontario are exempt from having to complete Alberta’s Mortgage Broker Private Lending 2025 Relicensing Course. Please request the course provider who you completed the Private Mortgages Course with to send confirmation of course completion to registration@reca.ca.

Upon receipt of confirmation of your course completion, the exemption from the re-licensing course will be applied to your myRECA account.

If you currently have a private-lending practice restriction on your licence, once you have completed the course, the Registrar will remove the practice restriction.

Where can I find my RECA Contact ID number? What is a RECA Contact ID number?

Your RECA Contact ID number is available on your home page when you log into your myRECA account. A RECA Contact ID number is a unique identification number assigned to you in RECA’s licensing database.

Is this course a one-time requirement, or does this need to be completed every year for re-licensing? 

RECA’s Mortgage Broker Industry Council has mandated this re-licensing education program for all mortgage licensees who wish to renew their RECA licence in 2025/2026. After the 2025/2026 renewal deadline of September 30, 2025, anyone looking to become licensed in Alberta to deal in mortgages, will be  required to take the Mortgage Broker Private Lending 2025 Relicensing Course as part of the pre-licensing mortgage education program.

Is there a final exam? 

The Mortgage Broker Private Lending 2025 Relicensing Course is not administered by RECA. AMBA is the designated course provider and decides how the course is assessed. You can find more information on the AMBA website.

How do I access the course?

I have completed the course; now what? 

RECA will receive confirmation from AMBA that you have completed the course. We will add indication of your course completion to the Education tab of your myRECA account, when we receive notification from AMBA, which can take time. No further action is required on your end. You’ll receive instructions for renewing your licence in mid-August, when RECA’s renewal system opens for all licensees.

What if I don’t plan to practice in private lending?

If you wish to renew your mortgage licence in Alberta, whether you practice in private lending activities or not, the Mortgage Broker Industry Council has mandated that all Alberta mortgage licensees must complete the Mortgage Broker Private Lending 2025 Re-licensing Course. This education is designed to protect licensees, enhance your knowledge and protect consumers.

If you currently have a private-lending practice restriction on your licence, once you have completed the course, the Registrar will remove the practice restriction.
