Consumer Alert:
Fraudsters Continue to Prey on Desperate Homeowners

The Real Estate Council of Alberta (RECA) urges consumers facing foreclosure or who have a mortgage in arrears to be wary of individuals offering solutions that seem too good to be true.

In recent years, RECA has taken significant action against unlicensed real estate and mortgage brokerage activity, including RECA’s enforcement action against Derek Johnson. Derek Johnson says he is helping people. He is not. He, and others, continue to prey on home owners.

Alberta's only licensing authority

Licensing is the foundation on which much of the Real Estate Council of Alberta’s (RECA) other work is built. Reviewing eligibility, providing comprehensive pre‐licensing education and assessing suitability are three of the ways in which RECA uses its licensing processes to ensure industry professionals will be able to work competently and professionally. Ensuring the integrity of the licensing process is at the core of everything RECA does. Find out more about becoming licensed in Alberta.
