When license renewals open on August 17, you will notice a change to this year’s renewals.
License renewal fees will remain the same this year. However, no fee credit will be applied to this year’s renewal.
Licensees will be required to make a one-time $50 contribution to the Real Estate Assurance Fund, a dedicated consumer protection fund that is separate from RECA’s operating budget and regulatory activities. This one-time contribution applies to existing licensees renewing their license. This is separate from the $100 Real Estate Assurance Fund contribution paid by individuals when they first become licensed.
Contributing to the Real Estate Assurance Fund is a professional responsibility shared by all licensees. It helps ensure dedicated consumer protection resources remain available. These are separate from RECA’s operational and regulatory activities. We recognize that this is an additional cost. This one-time contribution has been introduced to help ensure the Real Estate Assurance Fund remains financially sustainable and available to fulfill its purpose as an important consumer protection measure under Alberta’s real estate regulatory framework.
Note: The one-time $50 contribution does not apply to individuals licensed exclusively in condominium management. But it does apply to licensees who hold a condominium management license and are also licensed in real estate, property management, or mortgage brokerage who must make the contribution.
Why the Real Estate Assurance Fund Matters
Every day, Alberta licensees help consumers make some of the most significant financial decisions of their lives. The trust consumers place in Alberta’s real estate industry is built on the professionalism, integrity, and expertise demonstrated by licensees across the province. It is also supported by strong regulatory oversight and consumer protection measures that help maintain confidence in the marketplace.
The Real Estate Assurance Fund is one of those safeguards. The Real Estate Assurance Fund provides compensation in limited circumstances involving fraud, breach of trust, or failures to properly account for trust funds.
Claims against the Real Estate Assurance Fund are rare. The overwhelming majority of Alberta licensees conduct their business professionally and ethically every day. The low number of claims reflects the high standards of the profession. Maintaining a strong Real Estate Assurance Fund is essential. Recently, serious misconduct has occurred, and the Real Estate Assurance Fund helped protect consumers and reinforce the public confidence in Alberta’s licensed real estate industry. This one-time $50 contribution will help ensure the Real Estate Assurance Fund remains sustainable and available when needed.
Thank you for your continued commitment to professionalism, consumer protection, and maintaining the trust Albertans place in our industry.
