The Honourable Dale Nally, Minister of Service Alberta and Red Tape Reduction, has approved the proposed rule changes resulting from RECA’s comprehensive review of the Real Estate Act Rules.

The amendments modernize the Rules, reduce red tape, give licensees greater flexibility, and strengthen consumer protection. Changes include updated accounting requirements, stronger safeguards for trust accounts, clearer conflict-of-interest rules, and more precise definitions within the agri-business and mortgage sectors.

What happens next?

The amendments will not take effect immediately. RECA will communicate an implementation date by December 1, 2026, with the amendments coming into force later in 2027. RECA will also provide resources and engagement opportunities to help licensees understand the changes, assess their impact on day-to-day practice and business processes, and prepare for implementation.

Thank you for your contributions

This milestone reflects the significant contributions of industry members, consumers, and stakeholders throughout the rules review. On behalf of RECA’s Board of Directors, thank you to everyone who shared their perspectives and helped shape the amendments, with special appreciation to Minister Nally, the Industry Councils, the Rules Review Steering Committee and its Chair, Mr. Neil McCrank, KC, industry associations, participating licensees and consumers, and RECA staff.

This is an important step forward in modernizing the regulation of our industries, and we look forward to moving ahead with implementation.
