Licensing & Renewals > Real Estate > Opening a Brokerage > Broker Qualifications
A real estate associate may wish to become an associate broker or broker. A broker’s responsibilities, as outlined in the Real Estate Act and Rules, are different than those of an associate and require additional education and experience. Likewise, the qualifications required to become a broker are different than those required to become an associate.
Real estate associates who wish to complete the broker education and become licensed and registered as a broker must:
- Successfully complete the Real Estate Associates Program or equivalent;
- Successfully complete the Real Estate Brokers Program (REBP);
- Score 70% or higher on the Real Estate Brokers Program final exam; and,
- Have at least two years of industry experience as a licensed real estate industry member within the past five years.
As part of the requirements to hold an associate broker or broker licence, an individual must be authorized for all real estate activities (i.e. residential, commercial, rural and property management) The table below identifies the education requirements that an individual must complete to become authorized for all real estate activities. These requirements vary based on which Real Estate Associates Program (REAP) the individual completed in order to become licensed as an associate. (Note: If you began the REBP prior to March 1, 2012, please contact RECA for further information).

Those individuals who wish to complete the broker education, but do not wish to become a broker, may become licensed and registered as an associate broker. For more information about that process, please click here.
Those individuals who wish to complete the broker education and become a broker should be aware that there can only be one broker for a brokerage. As each brokerage can only have one licensed broker, individuals who wish to license and register as a broker, must either open their own brokerage or transfer to another brokerage in order to replace the existing broker.
