Pursuant to s.12 of the Real Estate Act, the Real Estate of Council of Alberta (RECA) has the responsibility and authority to determine the eligibility requirements of a person to renew an authorization to trade in real estate, deal in mortgages, or provide real estate appraisal services in Alberta, including post-licensing education standards. These post-licensing education requirements  include the Re-licensing Education Program (REP).

Individual real estate and mortgage brokerage industry members are issued a licence and registration certificate upon approval of their initial application by RECA. The registration certificate expires on September 30 each year. The REP requirement is related to the renewal of the registration certificate in order to remain authorized. In addition, real estate or mortgage brokerage industry members returning to the industry after an absence of 36 months or less from the date they ceased to be registered with a brokerage must complete all REP requirements for the period during which they were not registered.

Real estate appraisers and candidates are issued a licence upon approval of their initial application by RECA, which expires on September 30 each year. To remain authorized, all real estate appraisers and candidates must renew their licence on or before September 30 as well as complete any REP requirement related to the renewal of that licence. In addition, any real estate appraisers or candidates returning to the industry after an absence of 36 months or less from the date they ceased to be licensed with RECA must complete all REP requirements for the period during which they were not licensed.

The REP topics and course frequency is determined by RECA based on its experience administering the Real Estate Act and the feedback it receives from its advisory committees and industry associations. REP courses reflect consumer protection issues and other issues affecting the business of industry members. Specifically, REP courses focus on the issues that have changed since the last REP course, including legislative amendments, emerging issues affecting the industry and consumers, legal updates, risk reduction techniques, and other compliance and regulatory issues. REP courses strive to be timely and relevant for industry members and to protect the public interest.

RECA Education Offers REP Courses Online

All REP courses are available online through RECA Education, which is found on the RECA website (www.reca.ca). Industry members will require their RECA ID to enroll in their respective REP course.  A RECA ID begins with "RW-" for real estate industry members, "MW-" for mortgage brokerage industry members and "AW-" for real estate appraisal industry members. It is important that the dash "-" is included after the letters and before the numbers when typing in your RECA ID. Real estate and mortgage brokerage industry members should obtain their RECA ID from their brokers and real estate appraisers and candidates have their ID from processing their licence application . All industry members should retain their RECA ID for future access to RECA Education courses.
