Licensing & Renewals > Property Management > Opening a Brokerage > Broker Qualifications
Once licensed, an associate may wish to become an associate broker or broker. A real estate broker’s responsibilities, outlined in the Real Estate Act and Rules, are different than those of an associate and require additional education and experience. Likewise, the qualifications required of brokers are different than those required of associates.
Those individuals who wish to complete the broker education, but do not wish to become registered as a broker, may become licensed and registered as an associate broker. For more information about that process, please click here.
Associates who wish to complete the broker education and become licensed and registered as brokers must:
- successfully complete the Real Estate Associate’s Program or equivalent;
- successfully complete the Real Estate Broker’s Program offered by the Alberta Real Estate Association;
- have at least two years of industry experience as a licensed real estate industry member within the past five years; and,
- score 70% or higher on the provincial qualifying exam for brokers.
Additionally, as each brokerage can only have one licensed broker, individuals who wish to license and register as brokers, must either open their own brokerage or transfer to a brokerage that has a broker who is leaving.
