Lawyer (Legal Counsel)

RECA is seeking an experienced litigation lawyer to join our Professional Conduct Proceedings Team. The position is not just about prosecuting misconduct. It is supporting the real estate, mortgage and real estate appraisal professionals of Alberta to be the best they can be. It is working to ensure the conduct review process under the Real Estate Act is fair and supports the integrity of the profession and the safety of the public.

As Counsel you will:

  • Support members of  the Conduct Review Team who investigate allegations of misconduct through advice and research;
  • Prepare cases for presentation, researching legal issues and developing strategies to meet the objectives of professional standards;
  • Present cases on behalf of the Executive Director before Hearing Panels and Appeal Panels; and
  • Support Hearing Panels and Appeal Panels to provide fair process and meeting the requirements of natural justice.

The preferred candidate will have the following minimum qualifications:

  • A member of the Law Society of Alberta
  • 5-10 years professional experience
  • Experience appearing before administrative or judicial decision makers
  • Skills in legislative interpretation, legal research, drafting allegations, and presenting a case.
  • Experience with regulatory or criminal prosecutions is an asset
  • Proficiency in the Microsoft Office Suite, case analysis software and case management software is also an asset.

The Lawyer (Legal Counsel) position is an 18 month temporary position located in Calgary, Alberta. RECA offers an excellent work environment, work- life balance, a competitive salary and a temporary benefits package including health and dental coverage.

Council Member Opportunity - Public Member

The Real Estate Council of Alberta (RECA) is an independent non-government, standards-setting body responsible for governing more than 15,000 real estate brokers, mortgage brokers, and real estate appraisers in Alberta pursuant to the Real Estate Act. RECA is currently seeking an individual, who is a member of the public, to serve on its governing Council. Council members receive an honorarium and are reimbursed for their expenses. The individual qualities, knowledge, skills and experiences that would be an asset for a public member on Council include:

  • Leadership, governance and strategic planning;
  • Communication, issue analysis, collaboration and group decision-making;
  • Independence,  objectivity, sound judgment and personal integrity ;
  • Experience on regulatory bodies or quasi-judicial tribunals; and,
  • Commitment to RECA’s mandate to promote the integrity of the real estate industry and protect consumers.

This commitment includes:

  • Serving a 3-year term commencing November 1, 2012;
  • Preparing and participating in Council and committee meetings;
  • Participating in regulatory training sessions and attending industry related conferences;
  • Serving on professional disciplinary hearing panels and appeals; and,
  • Representing RECA at various meetings and events.

Communications Administrator

RECA is seeking an enthusiastic new graduate to fill the newly-created position of Communications Administrator. The Communications Administrator provides administrative and communications support to senior communications staff and the management team. This position has communications responsibilities internal and external to the organization, and assists in the fulfillment of regular communications tasks and special projects that further the Real Estate Council of Alberta’s strategic plan.

Reporting to the Communications Coordinator, the Communications Administrator will be responsible for:

  • Updating and maintaining the RECA website;
  • Ensuring factual accuracy and consistent language usage in all RECA communications materials;
  • Researching and writing internal and external communication deliverables;
  • Generating content ideas for RECA communications;
  • Conducting regular media scans on issues that may affect RECA and/or its industry professionals;
  • Providing administrative support to senior communications staff;
  • Working independently and cooperatively within a small, but dynamic communications team.

The successful candidate will have the following minimum qualifications:

  • A recent university or college graduate with a degree or diploma in journalism, communications and/or public relations;
  • Knowledge of current social media tools and platforms, and website analytics;
  • Strong computer skills including but not limited to Microsoft Word, Microsoft PowerPoint, InDesign, Dreamweaver, SharePoint and Photoshop;
  • Basic Flash and HTML skills are an asset;
  • Filming and editing experience using Adobe PremierePro is an asset;
  • Knowledge of or experience in the industries RECA governs is an asset;
  • Experience working with legislation is an asset.

This position is initially being offered as a full-time six-month term, commencing in July 2012, with the possibility of becoming permanent.
